'Alice in Wonderland' by Tim Burton

When Tim Burton did the remake for 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', I was a bit disappointed but from what I've seen so far from his current project, a remake of 'Alice in Wonderland', it looks to be a visually stunning and a bit dark true to Burton's classic style. Let's just see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Holy Abandonement

After years of disuse, an abandoned church in Spanish Harlem has opened its doors for a new art exhibit on religiosity and spirituality. Closed since its congregation dissolved in the 90s, St. John’s Episcopal American Catholic Church on the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 102nd Street, is the setting for “Sacrosanct,” a group exhibition produced by curator Sophie T. Lvoff. The exhibition opened on Sunday with ten artists sculptures, photographs, videos and installations, including an intensely self-referential Last Supper scene, inside the once holy space. A closing reception from 5 to 10 PM on Sunday will feature the spiritual works accompanied by the sounds of the St. John’s Choir, Young Man About Town, and Patrick Cleandenim. Click the images below for a preview of the art by Antoine Catala, Stephen Collier, Patrick Duncan, Zaq Landsberg, Sophie T. Lvoff, Heather Macionus, Santiago Mostyn, Eric Payson, Grant Willing and Alana Celii amidst the dilapidated house of worship. via AnimalNewYork

IT'S NOT THE HEAT, IT'S THE HUMILITY

MICHAEL GENOVESE - IT'S NOT THE HEAT, IT'S THE HUMILITY
A Chicago native, Genovese instinctively carries a metropolitan dialect and acumen into his work. An early exposure to multiculturalism joined with his professional training as a sign painter led to a socially inspired vehicle of expression. Creating work that makes use of his technical abilities and familiarity with specific materials, Genovese's ability to open a communal discourse ultimately became his trademark style. Through public murals and installations, his deft handling of type and unorthodox use of industrialized media further cemented his status as one of today's most promising contemporary artists. His latest work exemplifies his focus on community and its influence, but also digs inward and begins the process of reconciling his public works with his personal journeys.

Michael Genovese has recently exhibited at the University of Texas, San Antonio, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center. His work was recently published in New American Paintings; The Upset: Young Contemporary Art, Art Lies Contemporary Art Quarterly and Dazed and Confused.

Modern Imprisonment

MODERN LUXURY. PRISON RULES
At first glance you might think you are looking at the interirors of the latest highrises to be completed on Collins ave, or maybe even a ultra modern public library of sorts. The latter of the two would be closer to the truth. Yes it is a goverment building, but instead of housing books it houses wealthy gangsters and the like. Yes it is a minimum security prision in the Austrian city of Leoben.
Its construction was finished at the end of 2004 by Josef Hohensinn and the philosophy behind its architecture was an emphasis on the prisoners psychology of constructing it with glass walls to ensure the separation of the prisoners without complete solitude from the rest of the world. With a gym, sports center, and private rooms for guest, committing a crime in Austria has a bit of an upside no matter how you look at it; you commit the crime and you get away great, but if you commit the crime and get caught well they are gonna have to drag you kicking and screaming to the Ritz of prisons. Their is a down side here though, they have a maximum sentence of 18 months. by BRYAN COVET

MGMT - "Kids"

High Fashion Crime Scenes by Melanie Pullen

Melanie Pullen's collection of murders and suicides aren't the most unique. Honestly its very similar to what a certain South Florida native turned club promoter has done in the past but still visually striking nonetheless. The High Fashion Crime Scene series is based on vintage crime-scene images she mined from the files of Los Angeles Police Department, the County Coroner's Office, and other primary sources. Drawn to the rich details and compelling stories preserved in the records, she began re-enacting the crime-scenes, outfitting the "victims" in current haute couture, and photographing them in her staged settings. Check out some of her works from the High Fashion Crime Scene series.

Dark Night of the Soul at the Michael Kohn Gallery

DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
Los Angeles, CA (May 4, 2009)–Iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and music
visionary Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) are collaborating on their first ever
project and installation, Dark Night of the Soul, on view at the Michael Kohn
Gallery from May 30 through July 11, 2009.

For their premiere collaboration, David Lynch and Danger Mouse have designed a two-room installation at Michael Kohn Gallery capitalizing on the interplay between the music from Danger Mouse’s and Sparklehorse’s album Dark Night of the Soul and the artwork David Lynch created for the album, allowing the mediums of art and music to complement one another. Fifty of Lynch’s photographs are mounted on aluminum panels that seem to float on the gallery walls, reinforcing the moody rhythms of the music from Dark Night of the Soul that will play throughout the gallery. The installation encourages a fully enveloping experience that surpasses the individual visual or auditory elements.

Dark Night of the Soul began when Danger Mouse, who has been a fan of Lynch’s for many years, approached the filmmaker about a possible project. The artists worked together and were inspired by each other—Lynch making photographs influenced by the original songs that Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were creating. The result is Dark Night of the Soul, Danger Mouse’s first-ever gallery installation, and David Lynch’s first exhibition at Michael Kohn Gallery in nearly 15 years. (The first was in 1995, titled One through Ten, and featured photographs and drawings by the artist.) Lynch’s most recent installation, Diamonds, Gold and Dreams, was on view in the Cartier
Dome at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2008.

Dark Night of the Soul is also the title of a full-length album and
illustrated book ($50, published by powerHouse) combining the talents
of Danger Mouse, David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse.
In addition to the 100+ page book of David Lynch’s original
photographs, the album features artists such artists as the Flaming
Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, James Mercer (The Shins), Julian
Casablancas (The Strokes) and Suzanne Vega, among many others.

Dispatch Work by Jan Vormann

Dispatchwork by Jan Vormann in the Sabina Region of Italy and Berlin, Germany
What happens when a young artist from the city of Berlin is invited to participate in a project taking place in a pittoresque Italian village of the Sabina region? (words by Jan Vormann)
The sleepy little village of Bocchignano, where life revolves in fixed traditional patterns, by some seen as a dying relict of the past times, is now introduced into our present, the short-breathed and plastic-designed twentieth century.
Centuries of "Savoir-Vivre" with the "laissez-faire" mentality, visible, for example, in the patchwork construction of the cities´ walls, get intruded by modern shiny material, kids toys, setting a contrast in the thick grey stonewall of the narrow lanes.
Plastic construction pieces in all colors, between old stones, partly from Roman timeperiod, partly consisting of red bricks and grey aerated beton used for filling holes, neglecting any unity in visual appearance, subordinated to functionality.
The colorful and shiny polished plastic, worked into this dust-covered grey patina of diverse construction material, adds the modern touch of colorful design while distracting from and intriguing the serious life securing function of these walls: durability.
Jan Vormann once again indulged his passion for Plastic! This time, in Berlin, he "dispatched" mostly holes that remained from the World War II.
At some very touristic hot-spots, (Kupfergraben corner with Dorotheenstraße) a whole lot of people of all ages spontaneously started "helping" him with the dispachwork project and plastic construction pieces in all colors, between old stones, gave an interesting new twist in Berlin.

Push Button House by Adam Kalkin

DESIGN: Push Button House 1 Installation by Adam Kalkin
Adam Kalkin’s Push Button House 1 demonstrates how industrial products can repurposed as architectural elements, or as entire homes. The Push Button House was originally displayed at Art Basel Miami in 2005, and uses a standard shipping container as the structure of a home. Kalkin’s concept uses hydraulic power to lift and lower the sides of the shipping container, vastly expanding the usable living space. His design incorporates bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchenette, and living area. Though not actually viable for use as a home, Kalkin’s Push Button House is one of many shipping container concepts that utilize an object that might otherwise lie dormant.

Starck with Ballantyne

Philippe Starck, genius of contemporary architecture and design is experimenting, for the first time, with fashion to create a Ballantyne collection for men and woman. To discover an object or a place designed by Starck is to walk into a world of vivid imagination and to live fantasy. For more than 30 years, this unconventional creator, designer and architect has been boldly present in our everyday, creating objects that are "good" before they are beautiful, and iconic destinations that are pure poetry and change the vision of life.

The experience, tradition and international prestige of Ballantyne, the brand that since 1921 has been the synonymous with the most refined techniques and know how in cashmere knitwear, has been chosen by the internationally renowned creator to formulate a new project and brand, Starck With Ballantyne.

The collection includes a combination of multi function garments, with new ergonomics and contemporary fittings. Its ethos is “the right cashmere, at the right time, for the right purpose”. Composed of 30 pieces for men and 30 for women, Starck With Ballantyne fits in line with the needs of today's life. It is aimed at men and woman who cherish longevity and value modern heritage but embrace the use of modern, technical fabrics.

The materials and garments are all exclusively Ballantyne, researched by Philippe Starck in the Ballantyne site of Innerleithen. Wet-out cashmere dominates the collection, as do silk linings for lighter garments, practical hoods on knitwear and outerwear and teddy bear detachable waistcoats. Highly practical pockets are deliberately camouflaged to maintain the linearity and clean formality of the collection. For both men’s and women’s knitwear, a touch of sophisticated personality is provided by the contrasting fluorescent colored linings. The little sleights of hand, such as the foldable collar, increase the versatility of the outerwear pieces.

Starck’s vision was to emphasise the natural versatility of cashmere with the expression of humour, sexiness and desirability, in a modern, yet timeless, classic approach. His, and Ballantyne’s ultimate aim, was to offer exquisite style, practicality and quality to their clients.

Starck, an indefatigable and rebellious citizen of the world considers it his duty to share his ethic and subversive vision of a fairer world. He continues to be tuned in to our dreams, desires and needs by making his work a political and civic act but always with his love and humour.

Starck With Ballantyne will be on sale from October 2009 in Ballantyne flagship stores and selected multi-brand stores. Ballantyne will dedicate its new London store in Notting Hill exclusively to the Starck With Ballantyne collection.

Recycling Typography

Aleksi Hautamäki and Company
It is set upon me to congratulate the simplest and most why-didn’t-I-do-that designs, I think. Here’s one of them. It’s brilliant. These folks decided it was lamp time, and having seen the way of the modern design-driven world, decided that giant characters would be in order. And wow! If their idea of refurbishing isn’t the most pleasant bit of sustainable lampatude I’ve ever set eyes upon.Aleksi Hautamäki and company are currently in the “production” phase. They’ve got their sources for old light-up signs, they’ve got the technology, and they will rebuild them!
“Sustainability of this product is not superimposed, but in the very essence of it. The second life cycle creates new value for everybody involved, the sign maker, the producer, the retailer and the customer.” - Aleksi Hautamäki
The reinstalled LEDs have a life span of 30,000 hours, which means that if the light is on for 8 hours a day, they last the minimum of 10 years. The letters will have been tested to meet the European electricity standards.

Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side

So I had this old man moment the other day when I ran into this kid who was completely dressed as if he was fresh out of 1992. I had a Lou Reed Supreme print out and as I was putting it away he asked "Who's that old dude in the Supreme poster?" I told him that the "old dude" in the poster was Lou Reed and he just looked at me with a blank expression completely clueless. I tried to explain his relevance in a way that I thought he might understand by telling him that A Tribe Called Quest had sampled one of his songs. The kid had to be 16 or 17 and he had never heard of ATCQ!
While reflecting on that incident and randomly browsing the web I came across this post from Et Musique Pour Tous
...

Most of you will recognize this song as the sample for Tribe Called Quest’s Can I Kick It. While I think the Tribe song is amazing, it’s pale in comparison to the original. Take A Walk On The Wild Side was the surprise hit single from Lou Reed’s solo debut Transformer, and was produced by David Bowie, a big fan of Reed. In typical Reed fashion the song covers topics like drugs, oral sex, race, male prostitutes and of course transexuality. With lyrical content so lame these days I find myself listening to The Velvet Underground and Tupac like they just came out. As a member of The Velvets, Reed was very involved with Andy Warhol and the debauchery that came a long with it. In fact, some of the characters referred to in this song are Andy’s “superstars.” via Et Musique Pour Tous
