CHROMEO Halloween Night

My favorite Arab/Jewish Collective; Thug P and Dave 1, better known as Chromeo, will be dropping a DJ set on Halloween Night at the Heathrow Lounge.
Musicians in the classical sense, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and friends since childhood, this electro funk duo transcends thousands of years of turmoil and hatred to bring the world good music. Just imagine what would happen if Palestine and Israel got along.
Daryl Hall, of Hall and Oates, recently hosted the two at his house for a serious jam session and recorded the tenth episode of his Web Show; Live from Daryl's House.
Daryl says, "Chromeo is slick. Chromeo is dripping with reverb. Chromeo is Moog riffs, luxurious harmonies, macho guitar solos and real-deal songcraft."
You can watch the session by clicking here, or go to http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/index.php?page=ep10.

Upper Playground Obama Series

David Choe, Morning Breath, Munk One, Sam Flores, Alex Pardee, and Justin Bua in conjunction with Upper Playground bring you the latest installment to Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama's historic campaign.

Obama's camp has been incredibly progressive in the way they have approached the campaign; utilizing technology and connecting to the youth in this unprecedented presidential election. For instance, street artist Shepard Fairey's "Hope" image has been heavily used in this campaign by the Obama Camp and it wouldn't be surprising to see some of the Upper Playground images to be adopted as well.

Upper Playground will be giving away prints daily and to enter follow the instructions that are posted on Upper Playground News.
And even though the prints carry a $200 price tag some have already sold out and you can expect the rest to sell through as election day rapidly approaches.

Remember This

Tony Touch, DJ Camilo, PF Cuttin, Lazy K, Ron G, Dirty Harry, DJ Clue, Mister Cee, JUICE, Doo Wop, and Evil D.

Mike came across these while cleaning out some old boxes. I don't know if you remember but "The Hip Hop Connection" was the largest mixtape distributor in the South during the 90's.

I think I was like 13 when I got my first Tony Touch Mixtape from a little record shop called Iguana Records in Hollywood back in 1994 or 95. What I didn't know then was that the owner of Iguana Records was bootlegging mixtapes at the time. My interest in mixtapes lead me to meet Mark Ferman, no not the Mark Ferman from the OJ trial. Mark was the founder of "The Hip Hop Connection" and at the time he had just started to sell mixtapes, but the difference between "The Hip Hop Connection" and Iguana Records was that Mark actually bought master tapes from the DJs and was trying to do the whole mixtape thing the proper way.

I remember Mark used to use the standard TDK blank cassette tapes when he first started and eventually would use his own blanks which are pictured above. My first purple tape wasn't Raekwon's "Only Built for Cuban Links" album, but a DJ Clue tape that Mark had given me in early 95.

Fast forward a couple years, its late 96 early 97, and DJ Clue had just leaked 2 tracks off of "The Life After Death Album". Around that time the industry really pushed for the commercialization of Hip Hop or Rap music, I think it was at this point that the industry started to crack down on mixtapes and unfortunately they chose Mark to make an example out of. With pressure from the Recording Industry Feds raided his office, shut his whole operation down, confiscated all his dubbing equipment, and fined him heavily (hundreds of thousands of dollars).

What the record industry didn't realize at the time was that the mixtapes were actually helping album sales by introducing new artist to there target audience, "building hype", while costing the record labels not a single cent. Although the Industry would later realize and utilize the marketing power of mixtapes, at the time they were aggressively trying to stop the distribution of them. (Typical corporate Bullshit.)

I ran into Mark a few years back and he told me he had just sold the master tapes for a decent sum of money, which I was glad to hear "somewhat" of a happier ending to his story.

Anyways, the sight of these tapes took me back to a really good time in Hip Hop History and I know some of you can relate. And now to find a tape player!

BANKSY | The Village Pet Shop and Charcoal Grill

"The people who truly deface our neighborhoods are the companies that scrawl their giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff. They expect to be able to shout their message in your face for every available surface but you're never allowed to answer back. Well, they started this fight and the wall is the weapon of choice to hit them back," Banksy.
The British born artist seems to be taking his principles to another medium with his latest installation entitled "The Village Pet shop and Charcoal Grill." The installation is in a store front and not your typical gallery type setting. Banksy's reasoning for the look is deeply rooted in his beliefs in his graffiti and street art background. In his own words Banksy says, "Graffiti is not the lowest form of art. Despite having to creep out at night and lie to your mum it's actually the most honest artform available. There is no elitism or hype, it exhibits on some of the best walls a town has to offer, and nobody is put off by the price of admission" (Banksy: Wall and Piece). The store front allows the exhibit to be seen by the public ,"for free," at anytime of day or night staying true to his rooted beliefs.

The new exhibit includes a chicken coupe with a life like hen watching over her "soon to be" McDonald's chicken McNuggets chicks feeding on dipping sauce, a rabbit wearing pearls looking at itself in a vanity mirror, and a fishbowl with swimming fish sticks.

Ricky Powell at APT A.

Ricky Powell is a preserver of one of contemporary society’s most important cultural moments: the proverbial Golden Age of hip-hop. Powell’s ascendancy into hip-hop occurred as the culture was in its rebellious youth, born from his impulsive backstage raid of Run DMC and the Beastie Boys’ Raising Hell tour in 1986. As fate would have it, the Beastie Boys would bring Powell along to photograph their 1987 License to Ill tour shortly thereafter. It was then that Powell was first exposed to the wild underground universe of hip-hop superstardom that he has continued to document with unparalleled candor and sarcasm on film.

Indeed, Powell’s Apt. A collection presents a rare opportunity to look into the lives of hip hop’s original luminaries before the culture was being taken seriously enough to merit coverage in mainstream media. Having shot everyone from Slick Rick to Eazy E at their most candid and simultaneously histrionic, Powell has gone on to publish several books of his photography, launch a TV program and partner with Lush Life’s Ryan Sikorski to further immortalize his work through a streetwear brand that reeks of New York authenticity. Though his work has since taken him around the world several times, Powell remains aesthetically rooted in the streets of New York, anchored firmly to the environment that introduced him as a photographer back in the 1980s.

Apt.A is the jump-off to the Ricky Powell world tour. 2009 tour dates are being confirmed for Tokyo and London.
