'Alice in Wonderland' by Tim Burton

When Tim Burton did the remake for 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', I was a bit disappointed but from what I've seen so far from his current project, a remake of 'Alice in Wonderland', it looks to be a visually stunning and a bit dark true to Burton's classic style. Let's just see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Holy Abandonement

After years of disuse, an abandoned church in Spanish Harlem has opened its doors for a new art exhibit on religiosity and spirituality. Closed since its congregation dissolved in the 90s, St. John’s Episcopal American Catholic Church on the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 102nd Street, is the setting for “Sacrosanct,” a group exhibition produced by curator Sophie T. Lvoff. The exhibition opened on Sunday with ten artists sculptures, photographs, videos and installations, including an intensely self-referential Last Supper scene, inside the once holy space. A closing reception from 5 to 10 PM on Sunday will feature the spiritual works accompanied by the sounds of the St. John’s Choir, Young Man About Town, and Patrick Cleandenim. 131 Projects presents Analog/Digital: Part 2, a multimedia exhibition including the work of Marlene Lopez, Nicole Martinez, Juan Griego, Jillian Mayer, Robert Lorie, Gustavo Oviedo, Stephan Tugrul, Courtney Johnson, David Tamargo, Justin H. Long, Jay Oré, Adam Rush, and Johnny Robles.

The exhibition explores the tension between old and new technologies using analog and digital media, creating a sensory environment that includes found objects, painting, audio, photography, installation, and new media.

MICHAEL GENOVESE - IT'S NOT THE HEAT, IT'S THE HUMILITY

A Chicago native, Genovese instinctively carries a metropolitan dialect and acumen into his work. An early exposure to multiculturalism joined with his professional training as a sign painter led to a socially inspired vehicle of expression. Creating work that makes use of his technical abilities and familiarity with specific materials, Genovese's ability to open a communal discourse ultimately became his trademark style. Through public murals and installations, his deft handling of type and unorthodox use of industrialized media further cemented his status as one of today's most promising contemporary artists. His latest work exemplifies his focus on community and its influence, but also digs inward and begins the process of reconciling his public works with his personal journeys.

Michael Genovese has recently exhibited at the University of Texas, San Antonio, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center. His work was recently published in New American Paintings; The Upset: Young Contemporary Art, Art Lies Contemporary Art Quarterly and Dazed and Confused.

MODERN LUXURY. PRISON RULES

At first glance you might think you are looking at the interirors of the latest highrises to be completed on Collins ave, or maybe even a ultra modern public library of sorts. The latter of the two would be closer to the truth. Yes it is a goverment building, but instead of housing books it houses wealthy gangsters and the like. Yes it is a minimum security prision in the Austrian city of Leoben.

Its construction was finished at the end of 2004 by Josef Hohensinn and the philosophy behind its architecture was an emphasis on the prisoners psychology of constructing it with glass walls to ensure the separation of the prisoners without complete solitude from the rest of the world. With a gym, sports center, and private rooms for guest, committing a crime in Austria has a bit of an upside no matter how you look at it; you commit the crime and you get away great, but if you commit the crime and get caught well they are gonna have to drag you kicking and screaming to the Ritz of prisons. Their is a down side here though, they have a maximum sentence of 18 months. by BRYAN COVET

High Fashion Crime Scenes by Melanie Pullen

Melanie Pullen's collection of murders and suicides aren't the most unique. Honestly its very similar to what a certain South Florida native turned club promoter has done in the past but still visually striking nonetheless. The High Fashion Crime Scene series is based on vintage crime-scene images she mined from the files of Los Angeles Police Department, the County Coroner's Office, and other primary sources. Drawn to the rich details and compelling stories preserved in the records, she began re-enacting the crime-scenes, outfitting the "victims" in current haute couture, and photographing them in her staged settings. DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

Los Angeles, CA (May 4, 2009)–Iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and music
visionary Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) are collaborating on their first ever
project and installation, Dark Night of the Soul, on view at the Michael Kohn
Gallery from May 30 through July 11, 2009.
For their premiere collaboration, David Lynch and Danger Mouse have designed a two-room installation at Michael Kohn Gallery capitalizing on the interplay between the music from Danger Mouse’s and Sparklehorse’s album Dark Night of the Soul and the artwork David Lynch created for the album, allowing the mediums of art and music to complement one another. Fifty of Lynch’s photographs are mounted on aluminum panels that seem to float on the gallery walls, reinforcing the moody rhythms of the music from Dark Night of the Soul that will play throughout the gallery. The installation encourages a fully enveloping experience that surpasses the individual visual or auditory elements.

Dark Night of the Soul began when Danger Mouse, who has been a fan of Lynch’s for many years, approached the filmmaker about a possible project. The artists worked together and were inspired by each other—Lynch making photographs influenced by the original songs that Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were creating. The result is Dark Night of the Soul, Danger Mouse’s first-ever gallery installation, and David Lynch’s first exhibition at Michael Kohn Gallery in nearly 15 years. (The first was in 1995, titled One through Ten, and featured photographs and drawings by the artist.) Lynch’s most recent installation, Diamonds, Gold and Dreams, was on view in the Cartier
Dome at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2008.
Dark Night of the Soul is also the title of a full-length album and
illustrated book ($50, published by powerHouse) combining the talents
of Danger Mouse, David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse.
In addition to the 100+ page book of David Lynch’s original
photographs, the album features artists such artists as the Flaming
Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, James Mercer (The Shins), Julian
Casablancas (The Strokes) and Suzanne Vega, among many others.

Christoph Martin Schmid captures the apparition of the plastic southern Californian life. Christoph's work is reminiscent of David Hockney's swimming pool series of the 1960's and is no doubt heavily influenced by it.
