Scott Campbell - "If You Don't Belong, Don't Be Long"

In what will be his first solo presentation of his works in New York City, Scott Campbell will showcase his unique aesthetic via sculptures, paintings and drawings. Campbell has taken the blue collar grit and lore of tattoo culture and extracted a visual language and wit that are supremely refined and deliberate. His uncanny ability to tell a story with any medium, flesh or otherwise, will be on display for his upcoming exhibition, If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long, which will feature all new work.

R.I.P Purvis Young

Born February 4, 1943, Liberty City, Miami Purvis Young was a self-taught contemporary artist who is best known for his work while living in Overtown. Purvis brought legitimacy to Miami's art scene. Like many of the great artists in history, Purvis died poor. I truly have animosity toward those who were supposed to be taking care of him and his interests because they capitalized off of a poor man and his art, instead of sharing in the profits earned from his work. These so-called "care takers" put him up in what is comparable to a shack and barely provided the medications he needed for his poor health condition. His story is a sad one and at least with death he will be finally able to rest in peace. Although most of his public works he did in Overtown will never be seen due to redevelopment and sheer ignorance, Purvis lives on through his remaining works and through those people he touched with his art. "And so goes the tragedy of what we call the Art World."

Rest In Peace Keith "GURU" Elam

One half of the legendary Hip Hop duo GANGSTARR, Keith "GURU" Elam was a Boston born rapper who alongside DJ Premier created one of the most influential groups in Hip Hop history. Although both GURU and DJ Premier were not originally from New York, they are still accredited with developing and pioneering the NY hip hop sound. Gangstarr's influence in Hip Hop is immeasurable.

Boogie and the American Dream

Documentary Photographer Boogie on the Life/Death of the American Dream
TrueSlant in a new interview series by Matthew Newton launches its new project with an inaugural interview of one of my favorite photographers Boogie. For nearly 20 years, Serbian-born photographer Boogie has documented the lives of people marginalized by society, and those living on the fringe. He has photographed gang members and drug addicts in Brooklyn’s housing projects; neo-Nazi skinheads in Serbia; and transsexual prostitutes in Sao Paulo, Brazil gaining unfettered access into worlds where outsiders are normally greeted with violence, suspicion, or a combination of the two.He has told these stories with an unflinching eye — never recoiling, but always attempting to provide a truthful portrayal. “It’s just the way I see the world,” Boogie says. “People who view my work can make their own judgments.”Boogie’s photographs have the power to knock the wind out of you, or set a fire in your mind. His shots are provocative in an unexpected way. Amidst violence, sorrow, and grim reality, he manages to wring clarity and beauty from the chaos. You can check out the entire interview here

REMINDER: The Black Keys at The Fillmore Miami Beach

The Black Keys, guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, are well known for their concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. The Black Keys have been able to make something ferociously noisy, deceptively melodic, and surprisingly sincere out of the simplest tools and riffs. But their latest album, produced with Danger Mouse, takes them in a newer direction. They didn't veer uncomfortably far from the elemental rock & roll territory they'd mined so effectively on previous albums, but the new tracks have a spaciousness and clarity that accentuate the soulfulness in Dan's preternaturally weathered vocals and in arrangements that oscillate between melancholy and swagger.

Crystal Monoliths Group Exhibition

Crystal: completely transparent & unclouded.

Monolith: a geological feature such as a mountain, consisting of a single massive stone or rock, or a single piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument. In this case, the monolith represents the artist.

The idea of the group show is to showcase contemporary artists whose work is of a clear distinct voice and technical execution.
In a sense, the crystal monolith is a metaphor for the artist. Each one, in this show, demonstrate a self-less dedication to the larger visual voice they express.

Exhibiting Artists:

Jose Mertz
Johnny Robles
Ivanco Talevski
Charlie Immer
Morgan Blair
Destroy Rock City
Francesco LoCastro
Reinier Gamboa
