Beautiful Losers

Beautiful Losers film trailer from beautifullosersfilm on Vimeo.

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Featuring: Aaron Rose, Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Ed Templeton, Geoff McFetridge, Harmony Korine, Jo Jackson, Margaret Killgallen, Mike Mills, Deanna Templeton, Stephen Powers, Thomas Campbell, Shepard Fairey, and Cheryl Dunn.

Now Playing in Select Cities.

YONDER by Brandon Opalka

To kick off the start of the art season, Brandon Opalka presents his latest series of works at Dorsch Gallery this September. "Yonder", is an exhibition of works by Opalka that embody a place between reality and his imagination which exudes the experience of a dream like state.

Using model animals, Opalka's appropriation of them in his sculptural forms and then translation of them onto canvas makes the low high, the ideal subjective, the 'real' dreamlike. One's impressions of dreams when encountering Opalka's paintings are exactly what are most real in 'Yonder.'

The method of working with models has been a part of Opalka's process for several years now. This thread has taken him through dreamlike representational canvases to seemingly abstract work. In this show, Opalka returns to recognizable forms, while working toward an allegory that will fill out his opus.

Acknowledging this eventual goal, Opalka will pair text panels arbitrarily with his paintings, such that each painting has a story made evident, but that story is not necessarily his. This gesture underlines what is so frustrating and appealing about painting. Painting's value is in the stories it evokes, in falling into it, into 'Yonder,' where the stories fall away.

Also showing at Dorsch this month is Robbin Griffiths' "A Mechanical Advantage," the namesake piece in Griffiths' exhibition demonstrates how much mechanics can exponentially increase the force of a simple touch. In the shape of a wishbone, a cable is strung tightly between the two ends. Another line bisects it, making a 'T' form that is the nexus of the mechanical advantage. The sculpture's form evokes a harp, a symbol of ordered, heavenly music. And yet the combined raw force of physics and wood belie the comparison with those sleek string instruments of the past.

The works in the show will demonstrate the mechanics of circuitry, electronics, springs and beauty. Or is it the beauty of mechanics?

Banksy in the Big Easy

From the banks of Gaza to the satirical replication of Hollywood's most licentious heiresses, Banksy's work can be found all over the earth in many different forms. Best known for his socially and politically driven stencil art, Banksy has become the hierarch of the street art movement bringing credibility to a new generation of artists. And although Banksy's works have been selling for prodigious amounts of money, he has kept to his roots and recently bedecked the city of New Orleans.

Bringing inspiration to those that need it most is the nobility of Street Art. Like the West Bank wall on the Israel-Palestine Border, New Orleans is an area desperately in need of artistic stimulation. By keeping his works on the streets, Banksy is able to share his art with the people and away from the sometimes pretentious crowds of art collectors and gallery goers.

"Saturated" by KAWS at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery

The Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery does it again! This time with former graffiti writer turned designer/contemporary artist KAWS. KAWS' show, which is entitled "Saturated," will be showing from September 20th to November 15th at The Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Wynnwood. The Perrotin Gallery is definitely one of my favorite galleries in Miami. Perrotin is constantly raising the bar for Miami's art scene, bringing in amazing shows from artists in every genre, from local artist like Bhakti Baxter to internationally acclaimed artist such as Takashi Murakami.

Following the "Saturated" Show will be a furniture exhibition by Pharrell Williams in their gallery in Paris. Yea, thats right, Pharrell of the Neptunes and N*E*R*D! See what I mean about Perrotin. With Basel quickly approaching, Miami's Art scene is finally coming out of hibernation. Stay tuned for more info on other shows and exhibits.
