Photography by Kate Bernauer

Kate Bernauer

The work of Kate Bernauer is embedded with implied narratives that are inspired by dreams, myths and tall stories. The series ‘I’ll be home in time for dinner’ explores the ridiculous and often tragic nature of human experience through the staging of people engaged in strange and often futile activities. The use of theatrical lighting and props on location creates a stage where poetic metaphors address the contradictions and absurdities of everyday life.

Tomas Maier on Creative Collaboration

Tomas Maier muses on creative collaboration and his design process

Since assuming a seat at the helm of Bottega Veneta in 2001, Creative Director Tomas Maier has expanded the brand’s repertoire immensely. What was once a Mecca for luxury leather goods has evolved into a multi-faceted mega brand boasting men’s and women’s lines, as well as furniture and home décor. From working with in-house Italian artisans, to enlisting fine art photographers for the brand’s advertising campaigns, collaboration is integral to Maier’s creative process, as well as Bottega Veneta’s dynamic brand identity.

Maier first spoke about the challenges he has faced as head of Bottega Veneta, as well as the brand’s reputation for quiet sophistication. Here, in the second of three conversations, Maier discusses an upcoming partnership and personal style. As of mid-April, the brand showcases the fruits of a new partnership—a pairing with one of NYC’s premiere shopping destinations: Bergdorf Goodman. The full-store installation acts as a visual entrée into the world of Bottega Veneta. Here, Maier shows us the creative process and collaboration through his eyes... Photography by Teun Hocks

Teun Hocks is a Dutch born photgrapher/artist born in 1947. Hocks is the star of his own show, as one work makes explicit. Dressed as a ringmaster, he stands next to a large gray letter s and holds a red h in his right hand, balances a yellow o on his head, and holds a blue w in his left hand--a portrait of the artist as jester. Hocks, a sober Dutchman, seems to be praising folly, the folly of both art (works of art as "follies") and life (a funny, daunting business). The ironic spirit and dry wit of Erasmus is clearly alive in his works, which are sometimes bizarrely bright, making the irony all the more incisive, like a surgical slit into everyday life.

What is startling here is the sense of isolation. This is a man who likes his loneliness, however depressing it might be. He doesn't seek others to make him feel better, because he knows there is no feeling better--no way to escape the absurd situation. There's a kind of emotional as well as social nihilism in Hocks's insidious work, a sense of the nothingness of it all, which one can only tolerate with humor.

Ambiance - Fashion For Walls by LEVIS

Brussel's agency TBWA took the concept of a 'splash of paint' quite literally when it created this striking print ad for paint manufacturer Levis. Drawing a parallel between interiors and fashion is nothing new but rarely does it work so well, particularly in a print context. Sexy and commanding. Not usually word you associate with paint.

Vertigo Inducing Kazimir Supermatic by 2-B-2 Architecture

Created by 2-B-2 Architecture, this highly conceptual interior space with spatially graphic planes meeting into floors meeting into ceilings meeting into walls is not for the faint at mind. Kazimira Malevich’s supermatic compositions are prototypes, schemes on which the spectator can define his/her own spacial relationship within the room. Even the shadows cast by the lines create more geometric planes to confuse the visitor. Remember to take a dramamine before entering.

PRADA Transformer Art Space in Seoul

LOVE Magazine brings us some of the first looks at the Rem Koolhaus designed Prada Transformer in Seoul. “These are the first images of the (very) recently completed Prada Transformer art space in Seoul. The project consists of a temporary building masterminded by Rem Koolhuas that incorporates the four sides of a Tetetrahedron: a hexagon, a cross, a rectangle and a circle, and the whole thing is covered by a big stretchy elastic membrane. Over the course of the next few months the building will house a programme of exhibitions and cultural events, including Miuccia Prada’s Waist Down exhibition…”

Prindville Prestige Lamborghini Murciélago LP-640

British tuner Prindiville Prestige specializes in creating one-off, bespoke cars to an individual client’s precise - you might even say perverse - specifications. Frank Sinatra supposedly wanted his Lamborghini Miura upholstered in buffalo foreskins; that would be no problem for these guys. Just take a look at the Murcielago LP-640 they just basically re-designed from the ground up - the interior modifications alone run to €330,000. That’s for saddle-tanned leather, hand-finished aluminum accents and specially engineered aluminum air vents, for starters.

Outside, all of the bodywork with the exception of the front compartment lid has been redesigned in carbon fibre - even the roof panel. There’s a bolder, more assertive front valance, eye-catching sills, a more dynamic rear valance through housing a specially designed titanium sports exhaust system, handleless doors with remote electric opening, and a restyled engine bay cover with transparent cooling louvres. To protect all you can also have miniature cameras installed in each of the door mirrors feeding images to a monitor in the cabin. Buffalo foreskins are extra.

Current and Concepts

Mclaren P11 Supercar

One of the world’s best Formula One teams is set to unveil its latest creation: an environmentally friendly supercar. McLaren says the P11, which will feature a regenerative breaking system and v8 diesel-powered engine with a scorching top speed of over 200mph, will be the greenest vehicle in its class. But we can’t help but wonder, will it really live up to the eco hype?

McLaren is pitting its P11 against the likes of the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and the Porsche GT2. The ultra lightweight supercar is expected to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than four seconds, and come equipped with increased safety equipment. Now, these are all big claims, but is it truly accurate to call this vehicle ‘green’? Sure, the P11 may seem that way when compared to its supercar competitors. But when you consider its price tag—150,000 pounds, or roughly $218,000—and the other cars available on the market right now (the Tesla Roadster, for instance), one does have to wonder whether the P11 is the best McLaren could come up with.

Bertone Mantide Supercar

If Darth Vader drove a supercar, the Bertone Mantide would surely be it! This shocking one-off is the creation of Italian design house Bertone, who stunned the Chinese crowds when it threw off the covers at the Shanghai Show this week.

Peel back the slashed and vented carbon-fibre bodywork and you’ll find a Corvette ZR1 underneath. But the Origami-inspired panels aren’t just to draw attention – its designers claim the new shape reduces air resistance and produces more downforce at high speed.

Sensibly, Bertone has left the ZR1’s incredible engine well alone - it’s still a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 producing 631bhp. But thanks to the extensive use of super light carbon-fibre in the bodyshell, performance has increased. The mantide’s 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds shades two tenths off the standard Corvette, while the top speed climbs by 12mph to 217mph.

Although there’s no word on price, this unique vehicle will be available to buy, and Bertone has confirmed that replicas can be produced if demand is sufficiently high.

At Your Command Lamps by Daniel Loves Objects

Art imitates life and form meets function with these adjustable, human-sized lamps by Daniel Loves Objects. Though they're not available for purchase yet, the gold-plated cast metal mannequins-turned-lamps are a whimsical reminder that even the most everyday objects can break out of their mundane archetypes to take on new appearances.

Electrical wires removed for visualization sake* Imagine the classical movable mannequin takes on a whole new form and style. The classical lamp has evolved much over the years but what if this lamp allows your imagination to run wild? And every movement of joint is at your control? What will the evolution be? The results may be controversial, provoking or elegant. Finished in gold plating for a touch of exquisiteness.

R.I.P Shawn Mortensen (1966-2009)

Last night one of my heroes passed away. His name was Shawn Mortensen and during his career he photographed some of the most influential people in music, fashion, art, and pop culture. I had the honor of meeting Shawn at a NYLON Magazine photoshoot in Los Angeles back in March of this year, and I feel truly lucky to have met him before his passing. Here are some of his works that you may recognize.
