WOLF PARADE at the Fillmore Miami Beach

The indie rock combo Wolf Parade formed in Montreal, where the band's first show saw them opening for Arcade Fire. Bandmates Dan Boeckner, Spencer Krug, Hadji Bakara, and Arlen Thompson eventually gained the attention of songwriter Isaac Brock, who doubled as the frontman of Modest Mouse and an A&R rep for Sub Pop Records. Brock helped the band secure a deal with Sub Pop while serving as a stylistic touchstone for Wolf Parade's unique sound, which merged indie rock with post-punk.  Their debut full-length, Apologies to the Queen Mary, came out in September 2005. It was one of the fall's most anticipated releases. Wolf Parade issued their sophomore record, At Mount Zoomer, in June 2008. Emphasizing the distinct songwriting personalities of frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner, the album received great reviews and just narrowly missed the Top 40. By the end of the following year, Wolf Parade had already begun working on a third record. Their most recent release Expo 86 appeared in mid-2010 and has taken up where the last effort left off.

LCD Soundsystem at the Fillmore Miami Beach

LCD Soundsystem debuted with “Losing My Edge,” a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases ever. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous pissing contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths, laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines and newspapers would eventually declare James Murphy, the man behind both LCD Soundsystem and DFA, to be one of the coolest people on the planet. Murphy scattered three other LCD singles before releasing a self-titled full-length album. The second proper LCD Soundsystem album, Sound of Silver, was released in March 2007. It contained Murphy's most affecting songwriting and peaked within the Top 50 of the Billboard 200. Led by the single "Drunk Girls" and an accompanying Spike Jonze-directed video, LCD Soundsystem's third studio album, This Is Happening, was released this year to another round of great critical acclaim.

MGMT at the Fillmore Miami Beach

MGMT is an American band based in Brooklyn, New York, consisting of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden. Formed at Wesleyan University and originally with Cantora Records, they signed with Columbia Records and Red Ink in 2006.  On October 5, 2007, Spin.com named MGMT "Artist of the Day".  On November 14, 2007, Rolling Stone pegged MGMT as a top 10 "Artist to Watch" in 2008. The band was named 9th in the BBC's Sound of 2008 top 10 poll.  Their first album as MGMT, Oracular Spectacular, debuted at number 12 on the UK album chart and number six on the Australian ARIA Charts, and hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. It has also been named the 18th best album of the decade by Rolling Stone magazine and was named the best album of 2008 by NME.  MGMT also appeared prominently in Australia's Triple J Hottest 100 2008, coming in 2nd with "Electric Feel", 5th with "Kids" and 18th with "Time to Pretend".  MGMT was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and their track "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals. These are the first Grammy nominations for the band. Their second album, Congratulations, was recently released and they have just been added to the lineup for the well-known Voodoo Experience 2010 taking place over Halloween weekend in New Orleans, LA.

Yeasayer at the Fillmore Miami Beach

The music of Brooklyn's Yeasayer is an eclectic, genre-bending journey into pop, rock, Middle Eastern and African musics, folk, and dub. Vocalist/keyboardist Chris Keating and vocalist/guitarist Anand Wilder honed their vocal skills in a barbershop quartet and played in a high-school band, Sic Transit. Years later, the two relocated to New York and began shaping the project that would soon become Yeasayer.  Wilder's cousin, Ira Wolf Tuton, joined as the group's bassist, and drummer Luke Fasano was the last member to climb aboard. The band set to work on recording its debut album, All Hour Cymbals, which was unveiled to much critical acclaim (not to mention a healthy blogosphere buzz). International tour dates and festival appearances followed, during which the band honed its blend of live instrumentation and prerecorded samples. When it came time to record a second album, Yeasayer traveled to Woodstock, NY. The resulting record,Odd Blood, appeared in early 2010 and showcased a different side of the band, with synthetic sounds and dance-inspired production playing a much larger role.

REMINDER: The Black Keys at The Fillmore Miami Beach

The Black Keys, guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, are well known for their concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. The Black Keys have been able to make something ferociously noisy, deceptively melodic, and surprisingly sincere out of the simplest tools and riffs. But their latest album, produced with Danger Mouse, takes them in a newer direction. They didn't veer uncomfortably far from the elemental rock & roll territory they'd mined so effectively on previous albums, but the new tracks have a spaciousness and clarity that accentuate the soulfulness in Dan's preternaturally weathered vocals and in arrangements that oscillate between melancholy and swagger.

REMINDER: ARCTIC MONKEYS at the Fillmore Miami Beach

By distilling the sounds of Franz Ferdinand, the Clash, the Strokes, and the Libertines into a hybrid of swaggering indie rock and danceable neo-punk, Arctic Monkeys became one of the U.K.'s biggest bands of the new millennium. Their meteoric rise began in 2005, when the teenaged bandmates fielded offers from major labels and drew a sold-out crowd to the London Astoria, using little more than a self-released EP as bait. Several months later, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest-selling debut album in British history, entrenching Arctic Monkeys in the same circle as other multi-platinum acts.
